Massage for Lack of Motion and Movement

December 15th, 2012 • Posted by Personal Best and Utopia Day Spa • Permalink

Do you have a desk job and rarely get the chance to leave your seat during the day? Or are you on your feet all day until you clock out and sit in your car, trying to take the weight of the day off before you drive home? Our days demand physical intensity that we are not always aware of. We are creatures that get stuck doing repetitive movement instead of expanding our wings to stretch.

We tend to be people that don't get enough exercise and we don't change our body positioning enough throughout the day.The trick is that the body needs movement and change to maintain healthy circulation. Fluids can pool in the body and cause edema and swelling. The muscles need to move to get the blood to circulate. Oxygen and immune agents are carried in the blood and need to be distributed properly to maintain good health.

We don't expect you to quit your job or do a two hour work-out everyday. However, there is help out there. Regular massage is a way to keep those fluids balanced in your body and keep you vibrant and healthy. Through manual movement of the muscles, the liquids in the body are able to settle where they are needed and most beneficial.

We look forward to seeing you for your next massage toward greater health.

Cold Weather Skin Tips

In the depths of winter you may exercise caution when walking on ice covered sidewalks and snow covered driveways. Exercising the same level of caution is necessary for your skin during the colder season. With indoor heaters blazing, they leave skin dry and compromised. We have some advice for you this season to keep your skin youthful and moisturized.

At-Home Care

The main component of winter skin care is hydration. Running a cool mist humidifier can ease indoor air dryness. Even so, all skin types will probably need a seasonal shift to richer moisturizers for both face and body during the winter months.

Limit exposure to hot water also. Even though a hot shower may feel great after coming in from the cold, water that's too hot breaks down your skin's lipid barriers, which can make skin even drier. Instead, shower or bathe in lukewarm or even cool water.

Exfoliation is also important to slough away dry, flaky dead skin. You still need sunscreen too, on your face - and your hands, too, if they're exposed to the elements. Apply lotion or moisturizer after exfoliation while pores are still open.

Hydrating Facials

Hydrating facials perform double duty - polishing away rough, dry skin while providing deep hydration. We can perform a facial suited for your skin type that will smooth away fine lines and wrinkles and leave your skin baby soft. We can also recommend products for you to use at home to recreate the spa experience.

In addition to at home and professional skin care, maintaining a proper diet can translate into healthier skin during the harsh winter months. Fresh fruits and vegetables and plenty of water should be regular features at each meal. Taking a multivitamin supplement tat includes Omega-3 essential fatty acids may also help.

No More Marks: The Erasing of Scars

October 20th, 2012 • Posted by Personal Best and Utopia Day Spa • Permalink

They are caused by a sports injury, falling off of your bike as a kid, an emergency appendectomy, or that accidental burn from the oven. Scars are part of life and give way to the stories of their creation. Some scars are discreet and hidden, yet others are very visible and can be bothersome. There is hope, however. We have some tips to get you on your way to a scar-free body:

  • Consider microdermabrasion. To really attack scars, especially those on the face, a procedure called microdermabrasion can be performed. This procedure, which basically removes a layer of skin, is quite common. It's used to revitalize the skin and reduce the appearance of raised scars.
  • Massage. If you have a scar that bugs you, point it out to your therapist before your next massage. During a full body massage, your practitioner can spend a little extra time massaging the troubled spot. A massage can break down the dense bands of collagen that build up around the scar. After your appointment, a quick 30-second self massage over the scar can help too.
  • Use sunblock. It's vital to protect the scar from the sun's harmful rays. By shielding the scar from the sun, it decreases the likelihood of hyperpigmentation, where the scar turns color.
  • Ask about skin care products. Chat with our skin care expert and see if there is a product they can suggest to help your individual scars fade.
